MRI - Information for your Safety


Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic examination performed without ionizing radiation. 

Pictures are taken using a strong magnet, radio-waves and a computer. 

To assure patient safety, advanced screening is important.

Absolute Contraindications to MRI
Cardiac Pacemakers
Internal Automatic Defibrillator Wires
Intra-orbital metallic fragments (Eyes)
Ferromagnetic brain aneurysm clips
Poppen-Blaylock carotid artery vascular clamps

Devices Requiring Additional Information. Please contact the center you will be scanned at.
(Operative Notes With Make, Model and Lot Number of Any Implanted Devices)

Neurostimulators
Breast Tissue Expanders and Implants
Insulin, Chemotherapy and Other Medication Pumps
Eye Prosthesis/Facial Prosthesis
Intracranial Brain Aneurysm Clips and AVM Clips

Operative notes and precise bullet type and location are helpful when available.

Pregnancy

MRI may be safely performed in pregnant patients when the examination is medically warranted and cannot be deferred until after delivery.  When feasible, the MRI is scheduled after the first trimester.  Contrast is not given to pregnant patients at our offices.
